So. A couple of hours ago I found out I have a half-sister. How fucked up is that? Apparently my dad nailed a Finnish chick over a weekend in the late sixties (go dad! :-P), but what he didn't know was that the result was a daughter. The girl didn't bother to tell him either, so there was no way he could have known. The daughter however, now 35, decided to search for him, and they first spoke yesterday night. So my brother and I got the news today. Best of all, she now has a child, so I'm a half-uncle or whatever you call that and my father is a grandpa. Nice shocker eh :-P? My mom seemed to take it rather well, which I'm happy about. After all, there was no deception of any kind from my father's side, since there's no way he could have known. It's just, you know, fucked up! Christ. I even have pictures of her and her son. Now I'm waiting for her to write to me, since I gave my parents permission to send her my email address.
I got the last laugh though! I decided that afterwards would be a good moment to tell them I'm now dating a (Turkish) muslim girl. I'm sure that freaked them out quite a bit! They told me to be "careful." Haha. She's a sweety though. We're similar in so many ways it's scary. Best of all, she's a hermit like me, yet still she's incredibly cute! I can just stare into her eyes forever. And yay for having a girlfriend that doesn't come with extra social obligations! I'm just going to have to get used to not eating a lot of pork I guess. :-P
Ok I just had to get that off my chest. I didn't quite expect to have a bombshell like this dropped on me this weekend.

| Entourage... it's brilliant. |
[22 Aug 2005|11:29pm] |
I've been downloading all the episodes of this HBO show that's running nowadays, Entourage. It's just the greatest piece of comedy on TV right now. It took me a while to get into it, but boy was it worth it.
At first sight it isn't too interesting. It's about an up and coming movie star, Vince, and three of his childhood friends (his entourage) living the good life while trying to score some movies to play in. It pretty much centers on the everyday life of the bunch, not the making movies bit. It also has the guys going after hawt and, more importantly (IMHO), incredibly cute wimminz. Cute and hot being two entirely different things, obviously. I could write a whole update just about that, probably :P. But anyway. One of the first things you'll notice are the great cameos that appear in pretty much every ep. Jessica Alba, Gary Busey, Val Kilmer (completely unrecognizable as a bearded hippie selling pot), Scarlett Johansson, James Cameron, Hugh Heffner, etc (tons more). The best on of all IMO was Bob Saget, the epitome of unfunny, being hilarious as he played himself, only smoking huge amounts of pot and banging 7000 dollar whores ("did you just get cockblocked by Bob Saget?"). My favorite character is Vince's agent, Ari, whose comments are absolutely fucking hilarious at times. There's some real winners in there. One even spawned its own little site dedicated to it.
Now really. I know I suck at making stuff sound interesting. Go find a review or something if you want a structured, well worded, informative opinion :P. I'm just saying you should give this a try. It's funny, it's original, it has great acting, what more does one need? Normally I couldn't care less about movies and TV, but I'm always eagerly anticipating this show's new ep every Sunday. Try eeeeeet!

Amaral - Una pequeña parte del mundo |
] |
23 Nov 2003. Omg! Just remembered I had this here LJ thingy, so I thought it would be a good moment for a little update. Which I suspect the first person might read in about four months or so.
Well... *looks down at previous entry*... I finished that whole Spain thing there. Turned out to be the best decision I've made in my whole life. I learned a ton there: about people, myself, life, love and of course a whole new language (check 3). One of the things I'm most happy with is that I've really learned how to listen to people properly; I've turned into a pretty empathic person. I find it very rewarding when you have such a good relationship with a person that they feel they can just tell you anything that's on their mind, no matter what it is. Gives me a feeling of being wanted and/or useful. In return I just give my opinion or try to help in case of a problem or something like that. Fits me perfectly, since I don't actually really like talking about myself, and I think I'm probably a pretty boring person to others. I'm low maintenance when it comes to attention in a relationship. :P
Urge to rant rising... going... rising, RISING! Gone. Jeez that wasn't a good way to start my first update in almost 2 years eh? It kind of gives away what I've been busy with the past year: psychology. That's right, I dropped computer science in favor of psychology. Because it's just infinitely more interesting, and I don't think I'll end up behind a computer 24/7 with this 'new' choice. On the other hand I'm not totally happy with the field of psychology though. My gut feeling still says it's a bullshit science compared to REAL science like compsci or physics or engineering or stuff like that. I still kind of look down on it, even though I'm studying it myself now. Some of the things I read STILL make me yell bullshit, like all that Freud's stuff. Man that's dumb. And it's not even science for the most part, IMO. Just some disturbed old guy admitting that he wanted to kill his father and make love to his mom. Luckily for me, modern psychology agrees that (most) of his stuff is outdated, so now we get more interesting fields of study like social psychology and media psychology, for example. None of that 'lie down on the couch and tell me all your problems' crap. Science. With a purpose. Like finding out what happens to people when they're in a crowd. How authority or conformity works. The psychology of love and relationships. Self-esteem, aggression, subliminal messages. Did you know certain advertisements are designed using theories such as 'mortality salience' and 'ego-depletion theory?' That's evil. And fun! It totally teaches you how to take advantage of someone's subconsciousness and use it to your advantage. It's scary how predictable people can be in various situations. It's also very interesting, and the direction I will be taking when they give me the choice. Hamumu... er... muwhahahaha!
So, hmmm. What more. Learning Spanish has definitely left its mark. I'm downloading new CDs weekly to keep practicing. I've downloaded about 10 GB of Spanish music so far. I'd buy some CDs occasionally (like I did back there), but of course they're nowhere to be found in this crappy little country. It's amazing though, how much the world opens up for you when you learn another language. You don't only get to speak to more people, but it also allows you to listen to the music, read the books, watch the movies etc. And in case of Spanish, that's a LOT. I've also signed up for the foreign student mentor program, which means that I get to help new students who just arrived to study at my university. Naturally I hog all the Spanish speaking ones for myself, so now I have a bunch of Spanish / Latin American friends walking around here. It's fun when you run into them between classes, as it will always turn a few of your friends' (and in the case of psychology, mostly female friends' :P) heads when you start ranting in a language none of them understand all of a sudden. Heehee. It's always fun to be able to do stuff other people can't. For me it's almost a basic need, like food :P. Mucho funno.
As for flying: a couple of weeks ago I got in my first four flights in almost two years. Egad! First flight the instructor let me do everything myself (got me a little nervous, after all that time). The second flight, because everything went so well, he made me do one of those whaddayacallems in English, 'slip landing' in Dutch. Where you approach the landing strip flying fucking sideways. Second flight. In two years. With very heavy crosswind. I had only ever done one of those special landings solo once before. Naturally I fucked it up royally, but I managed to straighten out the plane correctly at least and make nice and soft landing. The instructor let me go solo again after just those two short flights and a few compliments on my flying. I guess it really IS like riding a bike! Yay me! Too bad I could just stay for one more day, allowing me to fly twice more.
So anyway. Current plans involve mentoring a bunch of foreigners the coming week, giving basic Dutch classes to about 80 more foreigners the week after (teacher Christiaan!), and giving a tour of the city to yet ANOTHER group of foreigners the week after that. I should start asking money for this :P. I doubt I'll get to speak my own language much these weeks. I've started reading this here book to get in the spirit of things. It's humongous. I hope it's fun.
TTYL.
Oh yeah, and <3 Canada

The Flaming Lips - Fight Test |

Well, some friends and I went to Portugal for a day, since we´re pretty close to the border anyway. We were told that Guarda was similar in size to Salamanca (where I live now), so we thought that´d be a good place to go.
Big mistake, hehe. Guarda might just be the most boring, unexciting place I´ve ever had the displeasure of visiting. There was literally nothing to do except walk around and visit some cafe or another. Around 1 in the afternoon (the usual time in Spain) we had dinner at some cheapass place, which wasn´t half bad. Except that the fish was still raw on the inside.
So we arrived at 6:20 in the morning cause that was the only train going to Portugal that day, and we couldn´t leave until 10 in the evening cause there was only one train going back to Salamanca that day. So that was more than 15.5 hours of walking around this tiny place, visiting the odd cafe and the cathedral they have there. Well, at least the people I went with had a sense of humor and I got some nice pictures...
In other news, my chica bonita should be back this week, so we´ll see how that works out. She´s proving to be a tough nut to crack, and doesn´t seem to be of the really outgoing kind. Maybe I should invite her over to my place for a quiet evening some time, hehe.
Not much else going on really. My Spanish is coming along fine (for three weeks worth of lessons, that is). I met a couple of Americans that are staying until May or so, unlike everyone else I know who is leaving in two or three weeks. That´s kinda sucky about this place really, people just stay for one or two months and that´s it, after that they go back home. Ah well at least I know these two and the two Spanish girls. Plus the American girl is cute as well.
Well time to go to the McD, since I don´t feel like cooking tonight. See y´all later.

Well, I made it in 1.5 days instead of the 2.5ish I planned for it (always the careful one), and it´s GREAT here. Salamanca isn´t that big at all, but it has plenty of places to go out. I share my house with three chicks (all Dutch :S), and, best of all, I got a cute Spanish girlfriend already :). Met her last Thursday, drank some, danced some, kissed some :)... Met up with her and a few of her friends again yesterday, where, after her friends demanded we´d kiss, I heard she´s leaving for her parents´ place today... for two weeks :(. Gah. Well, at least that´s a good way to start an eight month stay, scoring in the first week. :) She accompanied me to my apartment last night, but she had to leave really soon to pack her bags ´n´ stuff. Oh well.
The Spanish lessons are great. They´re in Spanish from day one, so it was kinda difficult at first, but you get used to them pretty soon. I have two teachers (both young women) for a group of 5 students, and one of ´em is so damn funny we´re in stitches all the time. Other students have told us our laughs can still be heard two rooms down the corridor. ;)
Anyways, I´m in Spain, surrounded by cute latinas (there are way more girls than guys in this city), the lessons are great fun (even the homework! :), and I go out nearly every night. Only my wallet isn´t gonna like this, but I say FEH! Feh to my wallet! Once in a lifetime experience. :)
Anyways, my internet ticks in this stupic cafe have run out, so I´m gonna put an end to this. Hasta luego mateys!

Almost time to unplug this computer and stuff it in the trunk of my car. I'm getting up in about 10 hours to start my lonesome journey. I hope to be over half way through France around this time tomorrow. Getting through Paris is gonna be the hard part, with its stupid Boulevard Peripherique... *kicks Paris*. Ah well, we'll see how it goes.
This is gonna be my last update until I find a computer with internet access in Spain, so hope it has MSN and see you on the other side...

Argh! I'm leaving for Spain in less than two days, so I'm packing, finishing up some administration and doing random stuff that needs to be done. Hectic!
When I get there I'll have very limited access to the internet, so I hope I'll be able to upload pics and update this journal regularly. I'll probably spend most of my time online doing that. I hope I'll be able to get on MSN!

I'm definitely moving to Spain now. My courses start November 3rd, so I'm leaving a couple of days before that to get settled and learn the layout of the city (Salamanca). Gah, it's gonna be so hard leaving everything behind... friends, family, internet in my room/house... call me a geek, but that's just way too convenient to have. Thankfully Salamanca has a university, so there should be plenty of opportunities to do stuff and make new friends.
I'm not looking forward to the drive though: 1800-2000km, alone, in a car without a radio... ack!

Oh yeah, and we should start an IACE community too. I got an invite for the Dutch IACE reunion (Oct. 19th), so I'll pimp it there. I still have a LJ-key, so how about it? :)

I'll have some buddies arriving tomorrow, one from southern Holland (Tilburg) and one from Germany (Dortmund). We'll play with the Xbox for a while, after/during which we'll down some beers and head to town to pick up chicks and whatnot. Actually they'll be here today, since it's past midnight and I've had a few too many beers once again. :P
Friday I'll leave for Kleve, Germany, for some gliding action. There'll be new people who want to make a few flights and hopefully become a member of the club, since a few friends and I have been promoting it the past couple of days. We got 62 people to come along for a weekend or so this year (if I recall correctly), and since we have about 35 members that is quite a lot. We should be able to get 10 new members from them easily.
Also I put a link up in my profile where you'll be able to donate oral sex. Cute girls are encouraged to donate as much as possible.
